ABOUT ABOUT

Whether new to #ClassroomBookADay or a veteran, this session is for you!
Children deserve to be seen, recognized, and loved for their full humanity, and they deserve to have their lived experiences affirmed on the pages of the books that we purchase, recommend, add to curriculum, and read aloud to them. This is the beauty and honor, and obligation, of the work that we do with young people. We can no longer be satisfied with the same old books and perspectives. You’ve committed to reading aloud picture books every day of the school year, so now what? Get the most benefit from daily picture book read alouds through critical analysis & strategic selection of titles you share. It’s time to look at texts with an eye toward positive representation, diversity, inclusiveness, and impact for the needs of your learners while also considering personal / organizational biases and missing representation. Take the benefits gained from #ClassroomBookADay to the next level by looking at the picture books you select with an eye toward positive representation, diversity, inclusiveness, and impact for the needs of your learners. Discussion will include acknowledging our own privileges and biases, methods for using a critical lens to analyze resources you already have, as well as specific strategies for critical analysis of individual books, leaving you better equipped and inspired to develop a more inclusive reading culture that supports all students in your school community.
